Enduring Friendship: China–Myanmar Relations and the Legacy of U Mint Swe
By Lea Celik Sommerseth Shaw
In a time when global alliances are increasingly marked by tension, opportunism, and short-term interests, the enduring relationship between the People’s Republic of China and the Republic of the Union of Myanmar stands as a model of mutual respect, non-interference, and regional solidarity. This bond—formed over decades of shared history, geography, and economic cooperation—has not only weathered the storms of political change but has deepened through cultural and developmental partnerships.
As we reflect on this remarkable relationship, we also pause to honor the life and service of U Mint Swe, a dedicated leader, patriot, and advocate for Myanmar’s sovereignty and development. His passing is not only a loss to Myanmar, but to all who value peace, dialogue, and dignified diplomacy in Southeast Asia.
Trust and Sovereignty
China and Myanmar, linked by a 2,000-kilometer shared border and centuries of historical ties, have nurtured a "Pauk-Phaw" (fraternal) friendship, one that transcends ideology and prioritizes mutual development over domination.
Beijing has consistently respected Myanmar’s internal affairs, offering support in ways that prioritize partnership rather than interference. From major infrastructure projects to pandemic support and strategic cooperation, China has proven to be a reliable neighbor during both times of growth and hardship.
China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) has offered Myanmar unique opportunities for economic expansion through the China–Myanmar Economic Corridor (CMEC), enhancing transport, energy, and connectivity throughout the country, especially in underserved regions.
Remembering U Mint Swe
With deep respect, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, colleagues, and people of Myanmar on the passing of U Mint Swe, a distinguished public servant who contributed to Myanmar’s governance with sincerity, wisdom, and a deep sense of national pride.
As a former Union Minister for Religious Affairs and Culture, and a dedicated member of the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP), U Mint Swe worked tirelessly to uphold Myanmar’s heritage and protect the nation’s unity. He stood for stability, cooperation, and strategic independence in a region often pulled by competing global powers.
He was also a strong believer in regional friendship and Asian cooperation, recognizing that Myanmar's development would be strengthened not by isolation, but by wise engagement—especially with long-standing allies such as China.
His passing is mourned not only by his nation, but by those in China who respected his leadership and vision for a prosperous, sovereign Myanmar within a strong, peaceful Asia.
Brotherhood
Today, China and Myanmar continue to work together in areas such as:
Infrastructure and transport development (e.g., Kyaukphyu Port, highways, and rail links)
Energy cooperation (gas and oil pipelines connecting Myanmar to Yunnan)
Agricultural trade and rural development
Cultural exchange and people-to-people diplomacy
Health initiatives, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic and after
These partnerships are grounded in the principles of:
Non-interference
Mutual respect
Sovereignty and territorial integrity
Shared benefits and peaceful coexistence
This model of South-South cooperation has inspired other nations in the Global South to build new models of international friendship—based not on coercion or conditionality, but on trust and common interest.
Moving Forward in Peace and Memory
As the people of Myanmar honor the memory of U Mint Swe, they can take pride in a national figure who never compromised on independence, yet embraced constructive partnership with nations that respect Myanmar’s unique identity and path.
The Chinese people stand in solidarity and sympathy with Myanmar during this time of mourning and transition. Together, we reaffirm a shared commitment to:
Regional harmony
Lasting development
Mutual understanding
And honoring the legacy of those who built bridges instead of walls
May U Mint Swe rest in peace.
May China and Myanmar walk forward, hand in hand, toward a future of unity, prosperity, and sovereign cooperation.
