Heritage

Born on the Aegean coast of İzmir, a city in mythological and historical resonancehome to the House of the Virgin Mary and once graced by the legacy of Aristotle Onassis. Lea Sultan Celik Sommerseth Shaw carries a heritage as layered as the landscape itself with ancestral lineage extends from the ancient villages surrounding Mount Ararat, steeped in cultural and spiritual symbolism, to the expansive Russian peninsula.

Lea was raised in Gothenburg, Sweden, where her family settled across the vibrant Scandinavian diaspora. She grew up in a multilingual household, where daily life was shaped by interfaith respect, philosophical dialogue, and a deep engagement with creative and literary traditions. This early immersion in cultural plurality and intellectual freedom laid the foundation for her lifelong commitment to cross-cultural understanding, ethical exploration.

Academic and Philosophical Path

Lea’s academic journey began in natural sciences in Vimmerby, the hometown of Pippi Longstocking, where she also cultivated a love for children’s literature. She later pursued studies in biomedicine and continues to conduct independent research, informed by her relationship with Stig Bengmark, a pioneer in holistic health science.

Her passion for research emerged early, spending countless hours in school libraries. A believer in philosophy as essential to societal development, Lea completed a thesis on Nietzsche’s Thus Spoke Zarathustra. At the Galtung Institute, she was inspired by Johan Galtung’s philosophy of peace—an influence that shaped the foundation of YS Trust. This initiative now includes YS Legal, empowering civil society through legal education, cross-border alliances, and humanitarian strategy.

Art, Film, and Cultural Engagement

Lea's adolescence was rich with cinematic exploration. Influenced by directors such as Tarkovsky and Fellini, she and her siblings would write synopses and debate cinema. In Lund, she engaged in dialogue with Anita Ekberg, who critiqued Fellini's work.

She studied Gallery management and screenwriting at Birkbeck, University of London, following earlier courses at the Hasselblad Center in Gothenburg. There, she briefly engaged with Ingmar Bergman during his preparation of Mary, Queen of Scots, and was later offered exhibition space for her own projects.

In London, she lived in Brick Lane near Tracey Emin, curating exhibitions and events through her Cargo Culture initiative. Her creative projects often drew from political history, as in her work at The Water Rats, a historic pub once frequented by Lenin—where she blended revolutionary themes with modern artistic expression.

Motherhood, Legal Advocacy, and Political Interventions

After the birth of her son, William (Noah), and in the wake of the pandemic, Lea paused her Paris-based projects due to political corruption affecting her family. She has since engaged directly with legal institutions across France, the UK, and The Hague, appealing to international authorities, including the United Nations, in response to governmental misconduct.

These challenges catalyzed the creation of YS Legal, an extension of YS Trust, designed to advocate for universal jurisdiction, civic engagement, and the protection of fundamental rights. Her initiative works to expose abuse of power through legal transparency, citizen documentation, and international policy reform.

Cultural and Political Initiatives

Lea founded the Evergreen Project, a Libertarian Green political movement, initially intended for development in Dublin. However, unresolved corruption involving her son’s case in Paris led her to restructure the project internationally. Alongside this, she builds Southwest Babylon, a diplomatic and creative venture submitted for international recognition and representation.

Nonprofit and Human Rights Work

Lea began her humanitarian journey through early NGO work and studies in Peace Philosophy at the Galtung Institute, followed by Human Rights Law at the Hague Academy of International Law. The tragic loss of her brother, Sehmuz Hakan Celik, and his fiancée Yesmin Aneska Morales Peñailillo in the Backabranden 1998 deeply shaped her trajectory which led her to faith and pilgrimage and In their memory, she founded the YS Trust to protect ethnic minorities and oppressed communities. The Universal Jurisdiction Channel emerged as a cross-border platform for civilian-to-policy engagement, now expanded through YS Legal in collaboration with teams in The Hague.

Philosophy and Faith

Lea's worldview is rooted in philosophy, theology, and philanthropy. A pilgrim by nature, she believes in Abraham’s God, yet holds an independent spiritual path informed by Zarathustra and Buddha. She advocates fiercely for the rights of children and animals, and opposes synthetic, industrial ideologies she believes conflict with humanity’s natural evolution. For Lea, karma and natural order are superior to man-made systems.

She views Neoliberalism not as capitalist distortion, but as a true form of adaptive socialism, emphasizing individual freedom, ecological justice, and transparent governance.

Publications and Creative Work

Before becoming a mother, Lea founded the Sommerseth Shaw Gallery and launched Cargo Culture Events in Brick Lane, promoting independent publishing and cultural dialogue. She also established Cargo Culture Publications and Amfitheatron, platforms for literature, philosophy, and multilingual expression. She is currently completing her autobiography: A Pilgrim’s Diary, to be published later this year.
