The Mediterranean
by Lea Celik Sommerseth Shaw
After my early scientific studies in the village of Pippi Longstocking, where I also studied children’s literature, I continued with literature and later with film. During Bergman’s preparation for Mary, Queen of Scots, I had a brief meeting with him and his team. I wrote a screenplay for my then neighbor, Freddie Wadling, but at that time he was recording with Sophie Zelmani, and that project became one of my first screenplays.
Later, in London, in my King’s Cross neighborhood, I studied Gallery Management at Birkbeck after some exchanges with Hasselblad in my hometown, and then continued my film studies at Ravensbourne and Ealing Studios. During that period, I was in contact with Joe Dallesandro and wrote a screenplay intended for him and Jane Birkin. However, Joe’s wife did not wish for him to work with female directors, and so I kept it as my second screenplay.
In Saint-Germain-des-Prés, my son and I often encountered Adrienne Pauly and the Mastroianni family in our neighborhoods. I knew well the king of Italy, and this brought me back to my years in Lund and to Anita, a critic of Marcello and Fellini. Yet in my Saint-Germain-des-Prés neighborhoods, the essence of Marcello was undeniable. I wrote this book as a quiet and poetic love story, dedicated to the golden age of Italian cinema.
At its heart, Marcello Di Fellini treats cinema not merely as entertainment, but as a space for existential inquiry. Indigenous to the Mediterranean and Mediterranean at heart, born on the Aegean coast of Smyrna (İzmir), with roots in the native Kurds of Mesopotamia extending to the Russian peninsula, this is a true reflection on Mediterranean philosophy. Marcello Di Fellini is my dedication to Italian cinema; it is a timeless bridge connecting history with authentic Mediterranean philosophy.
Italian and Spanish publication scheduled for July 2026 with a larger publishing house that will represent me and my book,
