Desert Festival

by Lea Celik Sommerseth Shaw

For as long as I can remember, the sounds of the desert have shaped my musical identity. My journey began with a deep connection to classical desert music traditions, from the hypnotic pulse of African rhythms to the intricate melodies of Asian folk cultures. I have always been drawn to genres like Raï, rooted in Algeria’s cultural expression, as well as to the vibrant, deeply spiritual sounds of Rajasthani desert music.

Across Asia and the Sahara, desert music carries a unique emotional depth. In regions such as Rajasthan, India, music is inseparable from storytelling, passed down through generations by communities that use rhythm and melody to preserve history, identity, and spiritual connection. Instruments like the kamayacha and khartal, alongside powerful vocal traditions, create a soundscape that is both raw and transcendental.

Similarly, the Sahara has long been a crossroads of musical exchange. From the blues-like desert sounds of Tuareg musicians to the evolving energy of North African Raï, the region reflects centuries of movement, migration, and cultural fusion. These traditions are not isolated—they echo across continents, linking African and Asian musical heritage in ways that feel both ancient and strikingly modern.

It is this intersection that has inspired my current work: Desert EDM. This project explores how traditional desert music, from Asia to the Sahara, can be reimagined through contemporary electronic production. By blending organic instrumentation, traditional vocals, and modern beats, Desert EDM creates a new sonic language that respects its roots while pushing boundaries forward.

This work will be released through my 2016-established venture, Cargo Culture Music. Founded in the culturally rich environment of Brick Lane, the platform was created as a space to champion global sounds—especially those that exist outside mainstream recognition. Over time, it has grown into a hub for collaboration, bringing together artists from different regions, backgrounds, and musical traditions.

In parallel, I have been developing a major cultural initiative in collaboration with festival organisers: the Desert Festival for Peace. Set within the vast and symbolic landscape of the Sahara, this festival aims to unite artists from across Asia, Africa, and beyond. It will serve as a platform for both traditional musicians and emerging experimental artists, including those exploring new genres like Desert EDM.

The vision behind the festival is simple but powerful—to create a space where music becomes a bridge between cultures, generations, and geographies. By bringing together diverse lineups that reflect the richness of desert music traditions, the festival hopes to highlight the shared human experience embedded in these sounds.

The lineup of participating musicians and ticket availability will be announced in the coming months. Alongside ticket releases, further updates will provide deeper insight into the artists, performances, and collaborative projects that will shape this unique event.
